History

Radio Brunel has one of the longest and most prestigious histories of any student radio station in the UK.

Originally launched in the 1970′s as University Radio Brunel, the station was a pirate radio station that was broadcasted through the radiators in the Halls Of Residence. The station moved from room to room, trying to avoid being caught out before becoming an official radio station in 1979, settling in the ground floor of Saltash Halls in the Vice-Chancellors garage. It was at this time that URB became nationally recognised as one of the top student stations, winning awards from the BBC.

In the early 1990′s, University Radio Brunel began a major re-launch and became B1000 and began broadcasting on both FM and AM bandwith. The station also moved out of halls and became a prominent part of the student union. In 2000, The UBS moved the station to within it’s main building and helped push URB to new levels of success. After a stream of success throughout the 90′s, University Radio Brunel, like so many other student radio stations, was shut down due to budget cuts and a lack of popularity in 2004.

In 2006, University Radio Brunel was brought back into existence by the UBS as an internet only radio station broadcasting on campus. In 2010, the name was shortened to just Radio Brunel and the station had a complete make over to bring the station into the 21st century with both on and off campus broadcasting, new functioning studios and an executive committee to help run the station effectively.

The future is still bright for Radio Brunel and due to its growing popularity, we can make sure Brunel’s Official Radio Station’s future is as bright as when it first began!
